Good price on it. Reckon there is any advantage if I'm already using 180gr 308? 338fed is just necked up 308 isn't it.
Wouldn't have enough berries for much over 200gr you'd think.

I ownd one identical.
At best I could only get 1.5" 3 round at 100m with optimised handloads so had mine replaced with a 30-06 under warranty.
Just FWIW I paid uner 1200 new in 2018, it was new old stock
I have a feeling the 338 barrels they used were the ones that didnt make the cut for the longer win mags. Also worth doing some searching my experiance was identical with some others I found in the USA.
If it shoots to tikka standard, which is great then its a good buy.

advantage over a 308 under 100, even 150m... shit yeh. You get more of the hemorage damage along the lines of the 35 willy. They make alot of nosie and fair boot for what they are. Correct just a necked up 308.
Yeh some yanks run a heavier pill but 180/200 grain is where its at. Woodie made a purpouse 180/200grain ppsn for the 338fed/338-06 designed to expand and a few hundred feet per second less than that majority of 338 projectiles that are generally harder to suit the magnum speeds.
Hopefully woodie will be back in businuss, while i have 350 of the 200 grain ppsn at some point i will run out.
The new 30/06 tikka I got to replace the 338fed I have just rebarreled into a 338/06. Why not a fed? (it would have been a whelen but i got a shilen from the states for under 400 landed) because in my head the advantage of shooting a short action round is cancelled out by using the long action / one size fits all of the tikka. Yes there is the bolt stop but I guess its just optimising the platfrom. I also upped the barrel profile. While its not ideal for the weight size of things I feel the swing and point of the bigger cal is enhanced by abit more barrel. But at more weight.

Utilising the Tikkas long action in a shorty like a .338Federal, allows projectiles to be seated further, making up valuable powder Increase for heavier projectiles, I agree a 180-200gr is where it's at with the Fed.. I've also heard it to be on par with 30-06 performance, which is a bees dick on the 308, when we discuss power v power on internet.
You may be able to load the Fed quite warm with tikka mod, an then it's well punching hard 300m and without looking at data, not much difference in drop at 400 for all intents an purposes
RE 180gr... the 338 will push a 180gr faster than a 308, cos of the piston circumfrence..... more area to push.
2800fps im seeing.
